On Hugging A Friend
I am a girl, a sensory creature ,who throws her arms around
A things she loves a man a pillow waves a breeze a sound
But though the heart speaks to my touch, and urges it along
I’d like to think I know the times when this just feels all wrong
For mind is also useful in its sound communication
With the heart and so discerns, restrains acts of elation
But what if mind does flee her post, and undertake a stroll
What when clear and careful moments break from their patrol
When poise and charm and heartfelt arm
raised for a hearty shake
Betray a woman, bind her to a moment-
she should wake , at once
and notice that her breast is on his chest
Alas she is a stranger to his awkward pale distress
And when she hugs him closer is she like a perfumed Aunt?
Does he feel he’s ten years old and want to tell her but he can’t?
Is she anywhere aware of how uncomfortable he feels
Not when mind has gone a roving leaving heart to turn the wheel
While hugging you I didn’t once imagine we were lovers
But many years you’ve been my friend, my colleague or my brother
Just one day we spent together- 15 years or so ago
At the end of such a day I surely didn’t wish to go
You walked me to the station and stood before the gate
Then touched me on the shoulder
Who knew I’d have to wait
So many years to do what I had wanted to do then
Throw my arms around you and be close to you my friend.
