Sea of Words
Two boats set out, or shall we call them rafts
They took their leave from Origins disparate
The boats were made by Owners’ handicraft
And to each Sailor truth did seem apparent
And from this truth came purpose made complete
To set the rudder carefully in place
To make it past the Islands of Defeat
To write till all but words has been erased
Smooth enough the waves were near the shore
A page or two survived the first few sets
But closely to the Islands they did draw
Though one did not observe the other yet
Ahoy there, called the first boat to the other
Indeed I do recall your face my dear,
Yes, so do I, you are my long lost brother
Come close, and let us get away from here
And once the boats were close enough to meet
The Island shimmered in a background stance
The journey would be sure to be complete
And each would meet with happy circumstance
To pass the time they threw each other words
And riddles made of draughts and driftwood thoughts
They paddled best when words fell into verse
And made their way through Harbours, Docks and Ports.
One day he said I’m going round the Cove
I want to make it to the City gates
I want to draw my raft up at the Palace
And show them all that I’ve got what it takes
She smiled at him and pushed his raft away
If anyone can, it is you my dear
He laughed and paddled faster than before
She watched him go until he disappeared.
Then suddenly the waters seemed foreboding
And where had she been headed anyway?
And how to write without his gentle goading
The vast blue line that never goes away
But sure enough another day did dawn
And with it brought the sun and all its wealth
And blue horizons seemed again to call
She speaks her Poetry unto herself
From time to time she hears a sailor tell
Her brother’s fortunes, happy in the town
His clever head and heart have served him well
He built his raft so he would never drown.
